Becoming a Resident

At the Peter Birtwistle Trust, we provide 95 one-bedroom bungalows and flats, of which 5 are 2 bedroomed.

Our homes are designed to offer comfortable, supported living for older people in Colne, and we welcome applications from individuals aged 60 and over who meet our eligibility criteria.

Eligibility Criteria

To apply for a home with the Peter Birtwistle Trust, all applicants must meet the following conditions:

  • Age: All applicants must be 60 years or older.
  • Residency: All applicants should have been born in Colne or have lived in the area for at least 10 years.

Please note, when a couple applies they both need to meet the eligibility criteria.

Application Process

Trustees carefully consider all new applications, as well as any changes in the circumstances of existing applicants. Applications are reviewed based on a number of factors, including:

  • Age
  • Housing Needs: What type of property and location is most suitable for the applicant's needs.
  • Medical Circumstances: Any medical conditions that may affect housing requirements.
  • Financial Circumstances: To ensure the accommodation is affordable.
  • Social Need: Additional needs for support or care.

Applicants are placed on a waiting list in order of priority, based on the information provided on the application form.

When a Property Becomes Available

When a property becomes vacant, the Trust reviews the applications on the waiting list and screens them for suitability. This involves considering the applicant’s preferences (such as ground-floor flats) and matching these with the available accommodation.

  • A shortlist of applicants is drawn up based on priority and date of application.
  • Shortlisted applicants are invited to view the property.
  • If an applicant decides to accept the property, the following steps are completed:

Next Steps for New Residents

Once a property is accepted, the process is straightforward:

  1. Sign the appointment letter agreement.
  2. Agree on a moving in date
  3. Receive the keys to your new home.

New residents are responsible for the internal decoration of their home, including carpets, but the Trust ensures suitable floor coverings in the kitchen and bathroom. We also provide support with applying for housing benefit and organising utilities if needed.

Settling In

After moving in, we conduct a welcome visit to ensure that you are familiar with the heating system and any other fixtures and fittings in your new home. Our team is always available to assist you as you settle into your new surroundings.
